If the damage isn’t that bad, chances are you may even be able to fix the scratches of your alloy rims yourself. It’s actually easy as long as you know what to do and have the right paint. Prepare wheel lacquer or paint, high gloss clear lacquer, putty or any automotive repair putty, masking tape, masking paper, paint thinner, primer, sandpaper both wet and dry, water, sponge, soap, and a lint-free cloth.
Here are some 12 steps we have in mind for you to follow.
Wash your car specifically the wheels and the part that you will clean. Wash the whole wheel with soap and sponge. Try to get rid of as much grease and dirt you can find then rinse with water.
Pour some paint thinner at a small corner of your lint-free rag and scrub the portion of the wheel, removing any remaining grease and dirt. Wash multiple times with water.
Surround the area of the scratch with masking tape. Leave a quarter of an inch of tape-free area surrounding the scratched part.
Scrub damaged area with your sandpaper until you see some slight grooves in the area.
Apply some putty to the scratched area and cover it up with the putty.
Sand the area again until the rim is smooth. This will press the putty down the scratched area. Let it dry for 5 minutes before repeating this same process then let it dry again for another 5 minutes.
Cover the entire wheel or parts of the car with masking paper. This will prevent any unwanted paint stains on any other parts of the car that don’t need a repaint save the scratched area.
Spray a thin layer of lacquer or paint on the scratched area. Any brand product could be used as long as it’s of the same color. In most cases, a simple metallic silver will do.
Wait for the paint to dry. Sand it again with wet sandpaper this time. Apply another layer of paint if the putty shows up.
When the paint is dry, wash the area with soap and water.
About 8 inches away from the area, spray clear gloss lacquer. It should be a quick spray with each spray lasting for only a second. Do this process 5 times.
Remove all masking tape and paper around the wheel. Let the rim dry overnight to achieve the best results.
